Senator McKibben Meets with Veterans at Statehouse

Legislators Approve $3 Million to Support Veterans Programs

Des Moines – State Sen. Larry McKibben (R-Marshalltown), co-chair of the Senate Standing Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs, met with local veterans at the Statehouse on Wednesday, Jan. 18.

“I’m glad to have the opportunity to meet with such a distinguished group of people,” said McKibben.  “Over our nation’s history, veterans have honorably served our country as members of the armed forces.  I deeply respect their service and sacrifice.”

Also on Wednesday, the Legislature approved a $3 million bill to provide continued state support to Iowa’s veterans.

The legislation includes $1 million to create a hardship grant program for military veterans seriously injured in a combat zone since Sept. 11, 2001 and $2 million in additional funding for a popular program that helps members of the National Guard or military reserves purchase homes.

The legislation also provides a commitment from the Legislature that the Veterans Home in Marshalltown will receive at least $3 million for capital improvements at a later date

The bill now goes to the governor’s office for his signature.

“This legislation is a small step we can take to provide some needed assistance to Iowa veterans and their families,” said McKibben.
