John Putney Elected as Senate Republican Whip

DES MOINES – The Senate Republican Caucus today elected Sen. John Putney (R-Gladbrook) to the newly-created position of Republican whip.

As Republican whip, Putney will work with Republican Leader Mary Lundby (R-Marion) and track support for legislation.  The pair also will work in tandem on strategic planning and fundraising efforts for the 2006 elections.  Putney will share office space with Lundby at the Statehouse.

“John Putney is an experienced leader and proven fundraiser who gets results,” said Lundby.  “His strategic vision will be tremendously helpful to Senate Republicans as we work to take the majority during the 2006 elections.”

The Republican whip is a newly-created position on the Senate Republican leadership team.  The position replaces the assistant leader spot vacated when Lundby was elected Republican leader.

Putney was first elected to the Iowa Senate in 2002.  He is a former assistant leader and currently serves as co-chair of the Senate Transportation Committee.

Outside of the Senate, Putney has served as Executive Director of the Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation since 1993. In this role, he has spearheaded a fundraising campaign that has successfully raised more than $60 million for the renovation and preservation of the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
