Senate Approves Wieck Legislation to help Sioux City

DES MOINES – Today the Iowa Senate unanimously passed SF 2183, a bill that would help local governments create intermodal enterprise zones, according to Sen. Ron Wieck (R-Sioux City) the bill’s sponsor.

“Economic growth is important to all of Iowa, including Sioux City,” said Wieck.  Sioux City is quickly growing and we need to support this growth.  This legislation will help with economic development efforts by allowing cities and counties to take advantage of transportation corridors.”

The legislation specifies that intermodal enterprise zones would offer tax advantages to businesses in designated areas near modes of transportation such as highways, airports, navigable waterways and railways.  The department of economic development would work with local governments to approve intermodal enterprise zone areas.

In order to receive permission from the department of economic development, the area must be a blighted area and located within one mile of at least three of the following five: a commercial service airport, a barge terminal or navigable waterway, entry to a rail line, entry to an interstate highway, or entry to a commercial and industrial highway network.

Up to four square miles of the city or county can be designated for the purpose of an enterprise zone.

The bill will now go to the House for consideration.
